Stress Analyses
Direct calculation methods to evaluate global and local responses of marine structures are being applied at Lloyd's Register ODS. Within strength analyses of complex marine structures, deformation, stress levels and buckling are evaluated. The analyses cover the entire ship structure and are based on the various vessel loading conditions.
Using a global Finite Element (FE) model, a design bending moment which simulates the most extreme sea-state condition is applied to the global model.
Based on the obtained structural response, global deformations and stress levels are evaluated and checked against the various rules and regulations issued by the Classification Societies. This allows optimisation of the global structure and possibilities for weight reduction in the early design phase.
Based on the results of the Global Stress Analysis, local areas of high stress concentration are identified and evaluated using fine mesh FE models. These models are analysed due to the resulting loads of the global analysis.
The local stress analyses are generally performed within the early design stage to improve the structural continuity, to reduce weight and to obtain a safer and more reliable structure.
