Research & Development

The Naval Software Solutions Group has established Lloyd's Register ODS as a leader in the field of naval architecture and marine engineering technology and services. Our extensive research and development experience in the technology challenges specific to the maritime industry has focused on engineering simulation and analysis software for naval and commercial vessels.

The TridentTM Suite of software - an in-house custom developed integrated suite of software for 3D modelling, design and analysis of ships - is used by shipyards, ship registries, naval architects and ship designers around the world. From detailed Finite Element Analysis (FEA), to seakeeping, to leading edge specialized analysis, Trident provides the full complement of tools required by the professional naval architect or marine engineer.

Proven technology developed over 25 years, Trident clients include:

  • Bureau Veritas, Lloyd's Register
  • Lockheed Martin
  • Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC)
  • Qinetiq
  • Defence R&D Canada (DRDC)
  • Canadian Navy and Coast Guard
  • U.S. Office of Naval Research (ONR)
  • U.K. Ministry of Defence (MOD)
  • Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO)
  • Australia's Defence Science and Technology Organization (DSTO)

Our firm commitment to R&D allows us to expand our software capabilities to target growing client needs.  This is evident in the custom development of our software in the following areas:

  • Life Cycle Management (LCM) of ship systems
  • Smart materials and structures
  • Probabilistic mechanics, reliability engineering
  • Multi-disciplinary design optimizations
  • Hybrid composite hull development
  • Fracture / fatigue reliability
  • Risk-based inspection & management

The R&D work has also shaped us into a global leader in noise and vibration control. Architectural acoustics and machinery noise control cover all types of design and analysis including noise prediction studies, design of noise reducing measures, sea trial assistance, underwater noise control, acoustic tests of components, vibration monitoring systems, environmental noise assessments, occupational noise investigation and investigation of acoustic properties of materials and components alike.
