Ocean Engineering

Throughout our thirty year involvement in offshore development, particularly exploratory initiatives, Lloyd's Register ODS has successfully delivered on a wide spectrum of domestic and international ocean and coastal engineering projects. Working with government and other industrial clients in the offshore industry, we have lead the way in:

  • Numerical modelling of seabed processes
  • Coastal engineering
  • Determination of design waves
  • Wharf, jetty, and breakwater design
  • Environmental impact assessment
  • Physical oceanography
  • The determination of standard and extreme design criteria for marine operations and structures, including ships, pipelines, offshore structures, harbours and coastal works
  • Field investigations and numerical modelling of physical and environmental processes in the ocean coastal region, with more than twenty-five years experience on the Scotian Shelf
  • Sediment transport including prediction, prevention and remediation of erosion and scour around bottom-fixed structures and pipelines
  • Numerical modelling of dispersion of produced water, mud and cuttings from offshore platforms
  • Oil/condensate slick trajectory modelling and oil/condensate contingency plans
  • Numerical modelling of coastal oceanographic processes and predictive tools for dredging and submarine pipeline installation

Drawing on the experience of specialized teams in the fields of hydrodynamics, oceanography, coastal and ocean engineering and computer science, Lloyd's Register ODS specializes in the stringent and involved environmental assessment and review process associated with activities in the marine environment.

Numerical modelling in the Ocean Environment - Nearshore and offshore wave hindcasting, detailed wave modelling by refraction, diffraction and shoaling processes, cohesive and non-cohesive sediment transport modelling, coastal and fluvial erosion modelling

Coastal Zone Management - Field investigations, coastal development assessments, impact of structures on natural coastal processes, siltation and erosion, shore protection and beach renourishment, mapping and database storage of shoreline and coastal changes.

Marine Structures - Design and planning of coastal structures, wharves, revetments, groins, breakwaters, sea walls and jetties, computer aided design and analysis, structural integrity, the establishment of design criteria based upon average and extreme events, and tropical storm and hurricane protection.

Oceanographic - Environmental assessments, marine data cataloguing and image processing, software development and implementation, design and implementation of marine monitoring programs including remote sensing of the ocean and coastal zone, the monitoring of flooding and erosion processes, and the study of sea-ice and its interaction with ship structures and coastal processes.
