Blast Effects Analysis

Lloyd's Register ODS’s blast effect analysis involves the use of physically accurate virtual models of an explosive event – explosions, combustion and shock waves - and of the corresponding structural response of a target. Of particular interest to our clients are assets which include:

  • Ships
  • Buildings
  • Bridges
  • Equipment
  • Personnel

We use our explosive effects CFD analysis software, ChinookTM, in conjunction with either our TridentTM Suite (custom software development) or Livermore’s LS-DYNA®, to develop virtual models and provide advanced blast and structural impact analysis.

Combining these advanced tools with proven scientists, we are able to accurately model threat scenarios, analyze structural vulnerability, and recommend effective mitigation strategies, helping our military and industrial clients reduce risk and loss.

With nearly 50 years of combined experience in the areas of CFD and FE based structural analysis, notably for problems involving transient, compressible and chemically reacting flows, and fluid-structure interaction, Lloyd's Register ODS is a recognized leader of research in blast and structural impact analysis.

Specific projects we have contributed to include:

  • Explosive modeling and target response
  • Industrial hazard assessment
  • Terrorist threat assessment
  • Vulnerability analysis
  • Blast resistant design
  • Military force protection studies
  • Ballistic analysis
  • Forensic analysis
  • Explosion research
  • Experimental facility design
